THE SEVEN COMMANDMENTS
Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
Whatever goes upon two legs, or has wings, is a friend.
No animal shall wear clothes.
No animal shall sleep in a bed.
No animal shall drink alcohol.
No animal shall kill any other animal.
All animals are equal.
“Never mind the milk, comrades!” cried Napoleon, placing himself in front of the buckets.”
Communism: a form of government most closely associated with the ideas of Karl Marx, which he outlined in The Communist Manifesto. Communism is based on the goal of eliminating socioeconomic class struggles by creating a classless society in which everyone shares the benefits of labour and the state controls all property and wealth. Communist forms of government are not democracies.
Discussion:
In what ways do the pigs show that they are already taking control of the farm? Post some of your ideas below. Thank you.
Extra: Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon of Animal Farm is likely named after Napoleon Bonaparte. In a coup d'etat in November 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte became first consul of France. A coup d’etat is an illegal and overt attempt by a military organisation or other government elites to unseat an incumbent leadership by force. In 1802, he was made consul for life and two years later, emperor. Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France as a military dictator from 1799 to 1814.
It’s no accident that Orwell chose the name Napoleon. The name Stalin would have been too obvious so he simply chose the name of another dictator. It’s also the case that Stalin was an admirer of Napoleon.
